    The Defence, Security and Infrastructure group at RAND Europe conducts a wide-ranging portfolio of research for a diverse client base in the UK, Europe and beyond. Our work covers:


    • Defence (strategy; policy; capabilities; acquisition/ industrial; technology)
    • Security (terrorism, counter-violent extremism, border security, resilience and cyber)
    • Infrastructure (transport and choice modelling; infrastructure policy).


    We are looking for a dedicated Research Assistant for our Defence, Security and Infrastructure research group, who can support our Infrastructure-related research and analysis activities. The role would focus on transport policy and technology, quantifying travel demand; and choice and valuation studies across a range of sectors. Recent examples of some of our work include: undertaking a literature review for the World Bank to explore evidence on the link between transport investment and poverty alleviation, undertaking literature reviews for the Department for Transport to look at drivers of future travel demand and induced travel, and developing discrete choice models to quantify factors influencing consumers’ car type purchases, including for electric vehicles, based on stated choice experiments undertaken in surveys in six European countries.


    This is an opportunity for a motivated individual at the start of their career with an interest in quantitative analysis and transport policy to build their experience with a world-class research organisation.

    Key Responsibilities

    As a Research Assistant in the DSI Team you will support transport policy research, including developing discrete choice models to understand and predict future travel demand and the use of stated preference techniques more generally. This role will also support corporate activity as required.


    You will be expected to:

    • Support the development and implementation of discrete choice models and stated choice experiments to understand and quantify drivers of consumer demand.
    • Contribute to qualitative research to support transport policy, including evidence review, future scenario development, interviews, etc.
    • Analyse calls for tender to identify proposal requirements and supports the collation of administrative documents for proposals.
    • Draft sections of reports, proof read and check documents.

    Skills, Qualifications and Experience

    You will also ideally have experience or be willing to develop skills in some of the following areas:


    • Strong quantitative skills, preferably with background knowledge in mathematics, statistics, economics, engineering, or systems analysis.
    • Stated preference methods, discrete choice or applied economic modelling.
    • Strong report writing skills.
    • Qualitative methodologies, such as literature reviews, scenario analysis, Delphi, interviews, etc.Finally we expect you to hold a Post graduate degree or equivalent; ideally in a quantitative discipline.
